Widmeyer Communications Welcomes Veteran Polling Expert Doug Usher

Usher Joins Widmeyer Research & Polling as Senior VP

WASHINGTON, DC - Widmeyer Communications recently announced the appointment of polling expert Doug Usher, who will serve as Senior Vice President for the firm’s growing research and polling practice.

“We are excited to welcome Doug to Widmeyer,” said Joe Clayton, President and CEO of the independent communications firm with offices in Manhattan and Washington, D.C. “Doug has extensive experience assessing public opinion for top political campaigns and parties, corporate clients and public interest groups.  Because Widmeyer takes a research-based approach in almost everything we do, from corporate to nonprofit to risk and crisis campaigns, his leadership and expertise will be especially valuable to our efforts.”

Doug Usher comes to Widmeyer from the Mellman Group, where he served as Vice President. He has extensive experience conducting public opinion research, having worked for dozens of candidates at all levels of government, including the U.S. Senate, Congress, State Legislature, Mayor and City Council. Usher directed polling efforts for a number of high profile campaigns, including the re-elections of Senator Barbara Boxer and Representative Steny Hoyer, as well as for John Kerry’s presidential campaign.

Usher has also been involved in work for a wide range of public interest groups and labor unions, including the California Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology, the Sierra Club, the Trial Lawyers Associations of Washington, DC and West Virginia, and Reading is Fundamental.

A recognized figure, Usher has appeared on MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News and National Public Radio for his analysis of elections and political trends. He has also lectured widely on politics and public opinion, has led seminars for the U.S. State Department’s International Visitors program and has been published in Political Research Quarterly, Campaigns and Elections, The Hotline, and The Hill.

Usher earned a Masters and Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University, with a focus on American politics, advanced statistical techniques and survey methodology.  He also holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan.
