Widmeyer Research in Action
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDH)
Widmeyer’s special populations study for The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDH) included telephone focus groups with state advocates and representatives and a telephone survey among ND residents. Areas of inquiry included public attitudes and concerns about crises; information sources used and considered most credible; as well as awareness and perceptions of public health agencies and their risk communications. Using results from the study, NDDH developed communications guidelines for public information officers throughout the state. New communications procedures were developed for emergency messages, and brochures and fact sheets were translated into several languages identified as the most common in-state.
