While technology isn’t one of our practice areas, it doesn’t mean there aren’t lessons to be gleaned from looking at the rise of digital immigrants who have found new and profitable existence away from the traditional media they built their earlier careers on. We know social media has changed the PR business forever, but it’s worthwhile to listen to those on the media side talk about how their craft has changed. Leo Laporte, who’s most famous to be for his work in syndicated radio, as a co-host of the The Screen Savers and a short-lived (but Emmy winning) role on MSNBC’s The Site, is one of these immigrants to watch. Laporte delivered this session to the audience at a recent Online News Association event.
It’s almost 40 minutes in length but chock full of moments that make you think he can’t possibly be the only traditional media personality thinking they can go it alone, with better satisfaction and for more money. Sit down with a coffee or tea, watch the whole thing, take some notes, and think about how your world as a communicator will change if Laporte’s experience becomes commonplace.
