Jason Smith / Principal

Simply put, I love my job, and I love Widmeyer. For over a dozen years, I’ve been able to support national education and children’s health initiatives, as well as school-reform initiatives, for some of the most important federal agencies, companies, and non-profit groups in the US.

And I love working with very smart people — Widmeyer clients are among the brightest, most forward-thinking, innovative groups around.

Some may not find education reform and public health “sexy,” but luckily I found a place to call home — Widmeyer — where those issues proudly define who we are.

Biography:

Jason Smith is a principal of Widmeyer Communications. He oversees Widmeyer’s New York office as well as the firm’s PreK12 Education, Health & Wellness and Creative/Digital Practices.

Since joining Widmeyer in 1996, Smith has managed several of the firm's largest and most visible accounts, including Pearson Education, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Kellogg Foundation and Texas Instruments, among others. Smith has expertise in effective communications around issues including youth violence prevention, public health promotion, teacher effectiveness, mathematics and science education, innovation and reform, assessment and English Language Arts instruction.

Smith also directs Widmeyer's largest federal public information and engagement campaigns. Since its creation in 2001, Smith has overseen the award-winning National Bullying Prevention Campaign, “Take a Stand. Lend a Hand. Stop Bullying Now!” This multi-million-dollar public service campaign includes print, television and online advertisements, a comprehensive Web site and social media campaign, mass distribution of promotional material and public-private partnerships with some of America's most visible brands and respected nonprofits. Smith has also provided communications counsel and outreach on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education and the Library of Congress.

Before joining Widmeyer, Smith was a member of the public sector practice group for Towers Perrin, an international management-consulting firm, where he advised school superintendents and state departments of education. In addition, Smith worked in the offices of Rep. Virginia Smith (R-NE) and Sen. Terry Sanford (D-NC).

Smith graduated from Williams College in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in history. He also spent a year studying politics and history at Exeter College, Oxford University. He is a 1997 graduate of the Institute for Educational Leadership’s Education Policy Fellows program, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Academy of Hope, one of Washington, DC’s largest adult education and literacy programs.
