Doug Elwood, M.D. / Vice President & Medical Advisor

Having experienced the health care system firsthand as a medical student and then as a resident, I have seen how it works from the inside; unfortunately, it is far from perfect. Throughout my career, I have attempted to approach the medical world from a different perspective, one that is able to see beyond clinical outcomes to the system as a whole and how to develop concrete solutions. There is no question the ills that plague our health care system are multifactorial. Nonetheless, I believe it is possible to tackle them individually and create real results. Being an advocate for patients does not have to be limited to direct contact. This drive is what has led me to Widmeyer.

In looking for various opportunities outside of clinical care, I was surprised to find a company engaged in improving health care from multiple angles. From working with local medical centers on improving specific metrics of performance, to completing projects with national implications in policy and business, Widmeyer offers a broad portfolio within health that encompasses a wide spectrum of clients and visions. Its focus on the burgeoning area of well-being further speaks to the innovative approach this company adopts as it works with stakeholders to improve outcomes at all levels.

Biography:

Dr. Douglas Elwood brings more than 10 years of academic and clinical medical experience. Most recently, he completed his medical residency at NYU Langone Medical Center in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), a field responsible for a diverse range of patients including those who have experienced a spinal cord injury, brain injury, joint replacement, sports injury, chronic pain, and stroke.

While at NYU, he authored publications on major policy issues affecting his field and was actively involved in both clinical and educational research. Most recently, Dr. Elwood had two articles published in peer-reviewed journals, one on medical education and one on patient satisfaction. He has also delivered platform presentations at multiple national conferences and has garnered experience through his healthcare-focused MBA in both the financial and operational aspects of medicine. Spearheading strategic development projects in both didactics and recruitment during his residency earned him the First Annual Exceptional Contribution in Education by a Resident Award. He is board-certified in PM&R and sees patients part-time. He is also pending a faculty appointment at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Through his specialty, Dr. Elwood has focused specifically on the function of individuals and how medicine translates into safety and well-being. He has also branched out beyond direct clinical care to understand the diverse health care system from many vantage points. These experiences have included a boutique investment house where he conducted research on health care companies; the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, where he was a grant reviewer for innovative proposals totaling over $75 million; and a physician payment reform company dedicated to integrating best practice methodology.

Dr. Elwood received a BA in English Literature at Amherst College where he authored a honors thesis on James Joyce, and a MD/MBA degree at Jefferson Medical College. He is still actively involved in various projects and grants designed to improve health for underserved populations, including co-principal investigator on an innovative grant to educate physicians on the burgeoning field of women’s musculoskeletal health.
