Susan Tifft
Senior Counsel
Susan E. Tifft is the Eugene C. Patterson Professor of the Practice of Communications and Journalism at Duke University and provides Widmeyer's clients with strategic communications and media relations counsel and senior-level writing and editorial services.
An accomplished writer and author, Tifft has wide-ranging experience in journalism, media relations and politics. From 1982-1991 she was a writer and associate editor at Time magazine, covering national affairs, law, ethics, and education. Previously, she worked as a speechwriter for the re-election campaign of President Jimmy Carter; as director of public affairs for The Urban Institute; and as assistant press secretary for the Federal Election Commission.
Tifft is the co-author (with her husband, Pulitzer Prize-winner Alex S. Jones) of the much-heralded book, The Trust: The Private and Powerful Family Behind The New York Times. Her first biography, also co-authored with Mr. Jones, The Patriarch: The Rise And Fall Of The Bingham Dynasty, was included in The New York Times Book Review's list of Notable Books of 1991, and selected by BusinessWeek as one of the ten best business books of the year.
Other of Tifft's work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. She earned her undergraduate degree from Duke University and later served as a trustee of the university. She also holds a master's in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
