Joseph Clayton joined Widmeyer Communications in 1993 and led the firm’s growth in a variety of markets. The agency is today one of the leading independent public relations and public affairs consultancies in the United States with clients ranging from blue-chip corporations to leading foundations and government agencies. Clayton manages the day-to-day operations of the firm and provides senior counsel to clients facing challenges in the media, on Capitol Hill and in the marketplace. He offers more than twenty years of communications and public affairs experience. His primary focus at Widmeyer is staff development and ensuring that all Widmeyer clients benefit from the best the firm has to offer, from personal attention and smart, independent thinking to measurable results.
Clayton has developed and managed successful national media relations and public affairs campaigns for clients in health care, telecommunications, transportation, finance, aviation, publishing and education, among others. He has advised clients facing intense public relations challenges in aviation, labor/management relations and finance. Clayton has also led several coalitions through successful campaigns involving a combination of legislative and regulatory outreach, earned and paid media and grassroots efforts.
Clayton was a Legislative Assistant to former United States Senator Alan Dixon (D-IL). He managed a range of public policy issues for the Senator, from foreign relations and defense to criminal justice and government ethics. He also served as Vice President for Government and Public Affairs at American Student Assistance, a higher education financing organization. While there he directed all government and media relations activities during critical periods for ASA and the education finance industry. Clayton has served as a consultant to several political campaigns.
Clayton resides in Chevy Chase, Maryland with his wife and two sons.
