WHO WE ARE

Doug Usher, Ph.D

Senior Vice President

Doug Usher serves as Senior Vice President, and directs Widmeyer Research and Polling. Usher brings nearly a decade’s worth of public opinion research experience to all of Widmeyer’s practice areas.  He has lectured widely on public opinion, conducts seminars on polling and research methodology for the U.S. State Department’s International Visitors program, and has served as an expert witness in survey methodology for the U.S. Department of Justice. Usher has appeared on MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, National Public Radio, and CBC TV in Canada for his analysis of political trends.  His writing has been published in Campaigns and Elections, The Hotline, Political Research Quarterly, and The Hill.

Prior to joining Widmeyer, Usher served as Vice President of The Mellman Group, where he conducted public opinion research for dozens of successful Democratic candidates at all levels of government.  There, he led the polling efforts for the Alliance for A Better California’s sweeping initiative victories over Governor Schwarzenegger.  In the 2004 campaign cycle, Usher played a central role in the polling for a number of campaigns, including the re-elections of Senator Barbara Boxer and Representative Steny Hoyer, in addition to John Kerry’s presidential campaign. He has also led research efforts for some of the nation’s largest public interest groups, labor unions, trade associations and corporations, including the California Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology, the Trial Lawyers Associations of Washington, DC and West Virginia, and Reading is Fundamental. 

Usher holds a Masters and Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University, with a focus on advanced statistical techniques and research methodology.  Originally from Washington, D.C., Usher received a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Michigan. He currently lives in Washington with his wife and two children.
