Environment
The natural world is a complex place and engaging in environmental issues and policy can be just as complex.
Widmeyer Communications helps simplify the public affairs landscape on topics ranging from global climate change to offshore drilling to wildlife protection for clients by creating and executing measurable communications campaigns. We understand the environmental issues arena and help organizations find their voice and achieve their objectives.
A Proven Team
Our public affairs practitioners have experience in both crafting and influencing environmental policy. We relish the challenge of taking a complex issue and developing a compelling communications position for organizations and coalitions that resonates with target audiences.
In fact, many of us have deep experience in the issues – from crafting environmental and energy policy on Capitol Hill to engaging with the broader community in trade associations and advocacy organizations. Our team has worked on many of the most significant environmental issues of the past two decades – from reauthorization of Superfund and TSCA programs to changes to clean air and energy policy legislation.
Our expertise includes translating the results of scientific studies into layman terms; creating influence maps on issues such as climate change; counseling Fortune 500 CEOs on media and outreach strategies in support of global climate change advocacy programs; crafting talking points for legislators; and launching and executing campaigns for major environmental organizations.
Client Portfolio
National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling
In the aftermath of the largest environmental disaster in American history, Widmeyer worked with the President’s Oil Spill Commission to help it manage the initial media frenzy and effectively communicate its priorities to Gulf Coast residents and a concerned nation. Widmeyer provided strategic counsel and logistical support for the Commission’s launch, as well as on-site media relations assistance to Commission press staff before and during the first public meetings in New Orleans and DC. We also developed the Commission’s Twitter presence and provided initial counsel on the Commission’s earned media efforts and social media strategy. Media coverage secured by Widmeyer’s team includes NBC’s TODAY Show, National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and The Wall Street Journal.
ARC International Wildlife Crossing Infrastructure Design Competition
ARC is the first-ever international design contest aimed at solving the problem of ensuring the safe mobility of humans and wildlife in transportation-intensive regions. The Western Environmental Law Center (WELC), the design competition’s primary sponsor, needed communications counsel on how to strategically and concisely highlight the competition’s goals. Widmeyer worked closely with the ARC spokespeople to develop a message platform that that was easy to understand and supportive of ARC’s effort to tell a compelling story to the media, elected officials and the general public. We created awareness about the growing threat of collisions between wildlife and vehicles by generating media coverage of the ARC international competition to design a solution for the problem. Our efforts secured an in-depth piece in Land Letter/Greenwire and an exclusive story in The New York Times announcing the winning design team.
Major Beverage Company
Consumers are more likely to engage in recycling at home, but are less inclined to recycle at venues such as concerts or sporting events. Widmeyer recruited local environmental organizations to create “Green Teams” of volunteers to help promote recycling at a company-sponsored concert series. The volunteers were tasked with making recycling fun and rewarding for concert-goers. As a result, more than 1.5 tons of glass, plastic, cardboard and aluminum were delivered to recycling centers from the two events staffed by the Green Team and the company earned positive media attention from a number of important targets.
