Climate Legislation Passes the House, Moves on to the Senate.
The House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 by a vote of 219-212 on June 26. Key provisions of the bill, including its Title III cap-and-trade program, were largely based on recommendations advanced by the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a Widmeyer client. The measure, which USCAP noted “sets the United States on a clear path toward a long-awaited climate change policy,” will now move on to the Senate where it may be taken up before the August recess.

Push for High-Quality Computer Science Education Receives National Attention. Widmeyer clients Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) were recently highlighted in San Jose Mercury News and Los Angeles Times articles, respectively. Both articles focused on the need to incorporate high-quality computer science education into K-12 classrooms in a way that engages the students who will fill the pipeline to future jobs in the tech field. The LA Times article highlights a promising program in Los Angeles schools, while the San Jose Mercury News article points to a recent ACM/WGBH study showing troubling gender gaps in interest in computer science courses and careers.

Associated Press features Widmeyer client’s support of President Obama’s United We Serve. Widmeyer is working with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in announcing a $1.6 million investment to support activities related to United We Serve, President Obama’s call-to-action for Americans to play a part in community service this summer. Initial media coverage secured by Widmeyer includes articles by the Associated Press, which was picked-up by more than 30 news Web sites, San Francisco Business Times, Battle Creek Enquirer, Clarion-Ledger, the Detroit ABC affiliate and the Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek CBS affiliate.

Washington Post publishes op-ed from Widmeyer client. For more than four years Widmeyer has provided strategic counsel and media outreach to the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce. To further these efforts, Widmeyer assisted former U.S. Labor Secretaries William Brock and Ray Marshall, and Commission Vice-Chair Marc Tucker, in securing placement of their thoughts about the U.S. education system in one of the nation's most influential opinion sections.

Widmeyer client USCAP is the subject of a National Journal article about the inner workings of this unique business-environmental coalition that's developing policy solutions to address global warming. In the article, U.S. House Energy and Commerce Chair Henry Waxman says, "We built a great deal on their [USCAP's] proposal. It was constructive and well thought through." The article calls USCAP "the most sophisticated example of a new pragmatism shown by business and nonprofit public-interest advocates in recent times."
